But here’s what I tell every client: you should own your hosting account directly, and I’ll help you set it up.
This isn’t about making things harder for you – it’s about protecting your business.

I’ve seen what happens when designers control hosting, and it’s rarely pretty.
I’ve watched businesses get held hostage when they wanted to leave their agency.
I’ve seen websites disappear overnight when a designer went out of business.
I’ve heard horror stories about designers marking up hosting 200-300% and the client had no idea they were being overcharged.
When someone else manages your hosting account instead of you owning it directly, here’s what you don’t actually own:

I refuse to put my clients in that position.

You purchase the hosting directly from the company
Whether it’s Bluehost, Elementor, Godaddy, WP Engine, or another provider, you’re the one buying it.
- The account is in your name
- The credit card is yours
- You get the login credentials
- You see exactly what you’re paying
I help you through the setup process
- I’ll recommend the right hosting plan for your needs
- I’ll walk you through purchasing it (or do it together on a call)
- I’ll configure everything technical once the account is created
You maintain ownership, I maintain access (with your permission)
- If you sign up for my maintenance service, you give me admin access
- I can manage updates, backups, security – everything technical
- But you always have the master account
Why I Set It Up This Way
1. You’re Not Locked In
If you decide to stop working with me tomorrow, you won’t lose your website. You can hire another developer, move to an agency, or manage it yourself. Because YOU own the keys to their business.
2. You Pay What Hosting Actually Costs
Most quality hosting runs $10-$30 per month. Some designers charge $50, $100, even $150 per month for the exact same service.
I don’t mark it up because that’s not how I want to make money. My maintenance service is separate and transparent.
3. You Control Your Own Business Assets
Your website is a business asset, just like your logo, your lease, or your equipment. You should own it outright.
I wouldn’t let a designer control my business website – why would I do that to you?
4. You’re Protected If Something Happens to Me
What if I retire, get hit by a bus, or close my business? If I own your hosting, your website could disappear.
If you own it, you’re protected no matter what happens to me.
5. It’s Just the Right Thing to Do
I’m confident in the value I provide with website SEO, design, and maintenance.
I don’t need to trap you with hosting to keep you as a client. I’d rather earn your business by doing great work.
How the Process Actually Works
Step 1: I Recommend the Right Host
I’ll assess your needs – traffic expectations, features you’ll need, your budget. Then I’ll recommend 2-3 hosting options with honest pros and cons for each.
I don’t get kickbacks or affiliate commissions. I recommend what’s genuinely best for you.
Step 2: You Purchase Directly
I’ll send you the link and walk you through the signup process, or we can do it together on a screen share. You enter your payment information and create your account. You own it from day one.
Step 3: I Set Up Everything Technical
Once the account is created, you give me admin access. I install WordPress, configure security settings, set up automated backups, optimize performance, and handle all the technical details.
You don’t need to understand any of it – I handle everything.
Step 4: Ongoing Maintenance (Optional)
If you sign up for my website maintenance service, I keep that access and manage everything ongoing: plugin updates, security monitoring, backups, performance optimization, and fixing anything that breaks.
You keep ultimate control and can revoke my access anytime.
What About Support?
“But if something breaks, who do I call?”
If you’re on my maintenance plan, you call me. I handle everything. You never have to contact the hosting company or figure anything out yourself.
If you’re not on a maintenance plan, you can contact the hosting company’s support team, or you can hire any developer you want.
The point is: you have options because you own the account.
The Bottom Line
I could make extra money by marking up hosting or locking clients into my services. But I’d rather sleep well at night knowing I did right by my clients.
Your website is too important to your business to not truly own it. I’m here to build great websites and maintain them reliably – not to be a gatekeeper to your own business assets.
